PLANT A TREE
Join us in our mission to plant 25,000 trees in Sounio National Park. Your support is crucial in achieving this goal. Let's work together to protect our environment!
Let's join forces to make a difference in Sounio.
Unfortunately, in Greece alone, over the past decade, more than 1,4 million hectares of forests and woodland have been consumed by fires. The National Park of Sounio is one of the areas that has been repeatedly hit. After the devastating fires of 2021, the park needs our intervention to restore its greenery. To this end, we have launched an innovative initiative to plant 25,000 trees in the area, with the hope of setting an example for others to follow. But we can't do it alone - we need your support.
The restoration of nature is a shared responsibility, one that impacts not only our lives but also those of future generations. Together, we can protect and preserve nature.
Why We Chose to Reforest the National Forest of Sounio
While natural forest regeneration is possible in many parts of Greece after a fire, high-intensity fires occurring in short periods of time no longer allow for this natural process to occur.
During our inspections to assess the areas affected by the devastating 2021 forest fires, we identified areas like the National Forest of Sounion, specifically around the settlement of Agios Konstantinos, that had been burned for the second time in just 10 years. Unfortunately, the forest is now unable to regenerate naturally.
Therefore, reforestation is necessary to heal the forest's wounds and, if done with specific criteria, can serve as a protective shield for the entire area.
Our Mission: Reforestation and Innovation
We're embarking on an innovative reforestation project in the National Park of Sounio to strengthen the natural regeneration of our forests. Our goal is to plant 25,000 trees in an area where natural regeneration is no longer possible.
What makes our project innovative?
We're using a mix of broadleaf and coniferous species, with an emphasis on specific broadleaf species that were once prevalent in the area. This approach will help improve the biodiversity and aesthetics of the new forest, while also enhancing its fire resistance. Broadleaf species, such as oak, are particularly effective in helping the forest ecosystem withstand the more frequent and intense fires we've been experiencing. They also create a shield to protect the nearby settlement from future fires. Additionally, we'll be studying different planting methods to see what works best in the area.
Setting an Example for Others to Follow
Our aim is to create a successful reforestation model that can be adopted in other cases. We hope our efforts will inspire others to take action to protect and restore our precious forests.
Update on Our Progress: Restoring the National Park of Sounio
As of the end of 2022, we have completed the first phase of our reforestation project in the National Park of Sounion. Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, we were able to plant 15,000 trees in the area, covering approximately 200 acres. Our team planted a total of 14 different species of trees and shrubs, with a focus on broad-leaved species (70%) and conifers (30%). This approach will enhance the biodiversity and fire resistance of the new forest.
Moving forward, we plan to plant an additional 10,000 trees on the adjacent slope of the park. Over the next three years, we'll also be maintaining all the seedlings we've planted, which involves tasks such as forming pits, fertilizing, weeding, and watering.
We're thrilled with the progress we've made so far, but our work isn't done yet. With continued support from our community, we can achieve our goal of creating a thriving, sustainable forest in the National Park of Sounion.
Our shared goal is to help the Sounion National Park turn green, by creating a forest that is more resistant to fires and improving the biodiversity of the area. We can achieve this through our collective efforts.
