GREECE: WILDFIRES EMERGENCY
Help us save the endangered wildlife, and when the fires stop, restore our lost forest.
For one more year Greece is undergoing a severe fire season with thousands of fires devastating natural vegetation, wildlife and human fortunes. In the latest incident, just outside the country’s capital, a single forest fire destroyed over 10.000 hundreds of valuable forested land and a large number of houses and productive infrastructures.
Action to support the hundreds of volunteers working alongside government services to fight fires as well as to assure that proper rehabilitation measures are taken for burnt land is urgently needed. WWF in Greece supports the community of volunteer firefighters, securing necessary resources, equipment and training for over 50 volunteer teams each year. We also make sure that all fire incidents receive the proper post-fire attention, when necessary implementing ourselves forest rehabilitation projects. Especially in places of high biodiversity value.
Among the most vulnerable victims of forest fires is wildlife itself. Every year tens of thousands of wild animals are injured or killed during fires and many more suffer the loss of their habitats. Foxes, deers, jackals, buzzards, turtles and numerous endemic species of reptiles are included in the long list of threatened wildlife. The threat of wildfires adds upon the huge pressures already exerted to wildlife by climate change – just in June over 1700 wild animals required medical attention to survive the extreme heatwaves.
WWF partners with expert wildlife rescue organizations to assure that wild animals found injured receive proper medical care and then released back into the wild!
Your support is urgently needed!
To make sure we can continue to face the aggravating impacts of wildfires in the fragile ecosystems of Greece, we need you to join forces with us to ensure volunteers have the means to effectively prevent and suppress fires, injured wild animals are Located and taken care of and burnt lands are properly protected and rehabilitated.
