Plastic pollution is drowning our coastlines and endangering the wildlife that makes our seas so unique. Beaches are filled with waste. Whales and dolphins ingest plastic, including microplastics. Monk seals lose their habitat due to polluted shores. Loggerhead turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, often getting trapped in abandoned nets. Even fishers see their livelihoods shrink as fish ingest plastics or get caught in debris.

This is the reality of the Greek seas in many areas across the country.

This is the reality we want to change: our goal is to remove 25 tonnes of plastic.

We remove from the seabed items that do not belong there.

Our first stop was Kythnos.

There, divers cleaned the port of Merichas.

We also retrieved an abandoned net from the seabed.

4 tonnes of waste were removed from the seabed.

Our second stop was Andros.

We cleaned the ports of Gavrio and Chora.

We removed ghost nets from the sea near the Gavrionisia islets.

Together with volunteers, we cleaned Ateni beach.

To continue removing plastic from our seas, we need your support.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MAKES POSSIBLE

For over 30 years, we have been taking action to defend our seas and the species that depend on them. But the challenges are growing, and so must our efforts.

• Launch large-scale underwater and coastal clean-ups in areas suffering from plastic pollution
• Protect critical marine habitats across the country
• Remove deadly ghost nets that trap and kill marine animals
• Recycle the plastics collected, giving them a second life and promoting a circular economy

Our first major action took place in Kythnos, where —with specialized divers, the social, non-profit enterprise Enaleia, and heavy equipment— nearly 4 tons of waste were collected, filling an entire container. Of the overall debris collected, 36% was plastic.
