ADOPT A GORILLA
Mountain gorillas share up to 98% of their DNA with us. Disease poses serious threats to mountain gorillas. They are highly susceptible to human respiratory illnesses. There are only around 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the wild.
Adopt a Mountain Gorilla today and support our work. Because gorillas share much of our DNA, they can contract illnesses from people – but they don’t have the immune system to fight them. Even a simple cold can devastate an entire gorilla population. Meanwhile, mountain gorillas which are supposed to live in some of the most densely-populated parts of Africa – are now confined to isolated high-altitude forests.

ADOPT A GORILLA, SUPPORT OUR WORK
Animal adoptions like yours give a huge boost to our work. Your symbolic adoption supports our work. In Greece, together with our partners, we are building awareness on the necessity for the coexistence of people with wildlife, maintaining a precious balance. Another major threat to that balance is wildlife crime and we are doing our best to stop it.
Your adoption and support will help us in many ways. In WWF we train rangers to detect and safely remove snares set for other animals, which can often severely injure or kill gorillas. We work with local communities to support the diversification of livelihoods and build income generating programmes to help benefit gorillas. We help to protect vital gorilla habitat and support regular surveys of mountain gorilla populations. We also work with local governments to improve the management of the national parks where mountain gorillas live.
DID YOU KNOW?
They're found in high-altitude montane and bamboo forests – sometimes at elevations of 4,000m – where they mainly eat leaves, shoots and stems. Mountain gorillas generally live in groups with several females and their young, and one dominant male. Dominant males are known as ‘silverbacks’ because they have a patch of silver hair on their back and hips – which they develop when they’re about 12-15 years old.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE GORILLA
As their name implies, mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains, at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet. They have thicker fur, and more of it, compared to other great apes. The fur helps them to survive in a habitat where temperatures often drop below freezing.
The world’s smallest population of mountain gorillas—a subspecies of the eastern gorilla—is split in two and scientists have debated whether they may be two separate subspecies. A bit more than half live in the Virunga Mountains, a range of extinct volcanoes that border the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. The remainder can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.
