ADOPT A CARETTA
Only 1 in 1,000 turtles will survive. Adopt a caretta and support our work!
Adopt a caretta and support our work. A large number of loggerhead turtles are fatally injured in the Mediterranean, accidentally or intentionally. As a result, their numbers have dropped significantly and they are now considered an endangered species. Although it has survived successfully for millions of years, the loggerhead turtle faces extinction if we do not act immediately.

Adopt a caretta, support our work!
Animal adoptions like yours give a huge boost to our work. Your symbolic adoption supports our work. Our primary goal is to preserve the natural conditions for the survival and reproduction of the caretta in Greek seas and nesting beaches.
At WWF for almost 30years we have been protecting the beach of Sekania in Zakynthos to ensure that it remains the most important hatchery for caretta in the Mediterranean. We are working to preserve its natural wealth, and to keep the surrounding area unaffected by illegal human activities and tourist interventions, as well as by fires.
Did you know?
Caretta is an ancient inhabitant of the Mediterranean seas as it prefers warm and subtropical climates. It takes 30 years for a turtle to return to the beach where she was born to give birth to her young.
Caretta contributes significantly to the recycling of nutrients from the seabed, as the way she forages, by digging and scraping the seabed, maintains it’s balance. Her presence in our seas is important to sustain life in them.
Learn more about caretta
Boats moving at high speed during the summer tourist season and fishermen who see the caretta as a threat are some of the reasons why a large number of caretta lose their lives every year.
The degradation of caretta nesting beaches, mainly due to tourism and residential development, has resulted in making nesting difficult and often impossible for them..
